Plast uten olje og gass

Det har lyktes forskere å produsere vanlig plast uten bruk av olje og gass. De molekylene som plasten er bygget av, polymerer, kan nå lages gjennom en et-trinns gjæringsprosess med bakgrunn i biologisk materiale, basert på en spesiell stamme av bakterien E-coli. Det har vært gjort tidligere gjennom en fler-trinns prosess, men denne nye prosessen gjør at plast laget på denne måten blir kommersielt omsettelig.

"The polyesters and other polymers we use everyday are mostly derived from fossil oils made through the refinery or chemical process," said Lee. "The idea of producing polymers from renewable biomass has attracted much attention due to the increasing concerns of environmental problems and the limited nature of fossil resources. PLA is considered a good alternative to petroleum based plastics as it is both biodegradable and has a low toxicity to humans."

Forskerne sier at global oppvarming og andre miljproblemer gjør det nødvendig å produsere plast-polymerer på annen måte enn fra olje og gass. De produserte molekylene, som i seg selv ikke er naturlige, må både produseres fra, og kunne nedbrytes til, biologisk materiale i en naturlig biologisk syklus.

Fossil oils are a basis for many of the man used products. According to the review, 50% of daily activities of humans are dependent on fossil fuels/oils. We have reduce this to protect the planet.
